Comments by Jim Miller, DVD producer
Where it Began
This
summer, I was contacted by Steve Millar, a fellow longtime CP lover.
It was during one of our conversations, that I mentioned that I
had some vintage footage from many CP field trips. He suggested
that it would be a good idea to make that video available to other
enthusiasts. After some thought, I began culling my collection,
looking for useable footage. It quickly became apparent that the
old technology was pretty limited in terms of resolution, so I decided
to make a few trips to some old favorite spots to shoot new video
footage with both a Canon GL1 and a Sony Digital8 camera. Surprisingly,
I found that there were still some good habitats existing, though
many longtime favorites had been decimated by either development,
or in the case of one particular spot, the unchecked use of herbicides
by the power company!
The Rest is History
After some consideration, I decided to put the best of the old
material plus some current footage onto a DVD. As such things usually
go, it turned out to be a much larger task than I had at first assumed.
I quickly saw that while it was indeed possible to fit two hours
of video onto a DVD. I edited a "bare bones" video creating
a DVD that runs about 90 minutes. The close-ups are very close in
quality to the original digital video, and the "long shots"
(while not as clear as I would have liked) were quite acceptable
as well. All in all, I'm quite satisfied with my accomplishments.
A Video with a Cause
Not only was the plan to make a DVD that will enjoyed by fellow
CP enthusiasts, but also to make a DVD that will help make a difference.
Proceeds from the sale of this DVD are to be donated to both The
Nature Conservancy as well as International C |
