To publish an article in Carnivorous Plant Newsletter, you must be a
member of the International Carnivorous Plant Society. Only occasionally
will the editors permit or invite a contribution from a nonmember.
Articles that are less than 3000 words (the equivalent of 4 pages) can
be submitted directly to an editor. If you wish to write a much longer
article, it would be best to first contact one of the editors to determine
if the piece is appropriate for Carnivorous Plant Newsletter.
Instructions to Authors--by the editorial staff--
Carnivorous Plant Newsletter is the official journal of The International
Carnivorous Plant Society. It is devoted to the distribution of knowledge
about carnivorous plants, including information on cultivation, conservation,
systematics, physiology, and related fields of general and applied botany.
Carnivorous Plant Newsletter thrives only because of a steady stream of
material from its readership. You are encouraged to submit articles related
to carnivorous plants.
All contributions must include a cover letter. Use the cover letter to
declare whether your manuscript is a full article or short communication
(e.g., News & Views or announcements). It may take up to a year for
a contribution to be published, and any manuscript may be edited to some
degree prior to publication. Brief and clear writing will result in the
minimum number of editorial changes. Authors will be contacted only if
the editorial modifications are significant. The editors of Carnivorous
Plant Newsletter reserve the option of requesting external peer reviews,
especially for papers of scientific merit. If certain external peers should
be excluded from the reviewing process, this must be stated in the cover
letter. The date your manuscript was originally received by Carnivorous
Plant Newsletter (important only for some scientific research papers)
will be published along with your submission only if you request this
in the cover letter.
All contributions must have a full title. If references to botanical
taxa are made in the title, the scientific names of their families should
appear in the title (in brackets)---if you do not, we will insert it.
Every article must be accompanied by a list of authors that should include
the addresses of all authors. Indicate which author should be contacted
if our editorial staff requires more information. If possible, include
an e-mail address for this author. If you do not wish your mailing information
to appear in Carnivorous Plant Newsletter, please indicate so in your
cover letter. Keywords for articles will be selected by the editors. Scientific
plant names accepted by the authors of a manuscript must be set in a type
which is clearly different from the type used for names that are either
rejected or cited as synonyms. Full citation of all literature quoted
in the text must be provided in a section following the text of the manuscript.
All illustrations, diagrams, and tables must include descriptive captions.
Include these captions at the end of your manuscript (after the literature
citations).
No matter how brief, all submissions must be typed or printed from a
computer. Since your manuscript will be scanned, use twelve-point or larger
type and make sure the print is clear and free from defects. Typists should
use a fresh, clean ribbon. It is preferred that manuscripts longer than
250 words be submitted on a 3.5 inch computer disk (Macintosh or PC format).
The computer files should be in Microsoft Word (.doc), rich text format
(.rtf), or ASCII text (.txt). Include the name of the word processor and
version used. Submissions on computer disk must be accompanied by a printed
hard copy. Alternatively, manuscripts may be submitted electronically
via e-mail. Such electronic submissions may be in either ASCII text (.txt)
or rich-text format (.rtf), and may be uuencoded at your option.
Slides, quality prints, or artwork may be submitted. Page costs for illustrations
are high and since the duplication and printing process may render apparently
fine images unattractive, your photographs may not be published. If your
submission is accompanied by more than one photograph, number them so
they match the figure legends on your manuscript. To avoid damaging prints,
number their backs lightly with a permanent marker. Photographs without
supporting text are discouraged. To protect against loss, you should retain
your original photographs and submit to us duplicate prints or slides.
The editorial staff will assume your illustrations are duplicates---they
will not be returned unless requested in your cover letter.
All manuscripts and graphical material submitted for publication must
consist of original, unpublished material free of any copyrights. If copyrighted
material is submitted, it must be accompanied by a written expressed license
to reproduce it in Carnivorous Plant Newsletter, signed by the copyright
holder. All material intended for publication in Carnivorous Plant Newsletter
should be submitted to one of the addresses below.
